Penn State Hershey names new chief information officer

Penn State Hershey Medical Center has named a new chief information officer. Rod Dykehouse brings with him significant experience in academic medicine, having previously served as CIO for both UCLA Medical Sciences and Froedtert Health System, an academic partner of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

At UCLA and Froedtert, Dykehouse oversaw IT for the organizations' medical centers, faculty practice groups and schools of medicine, including IT support for research initiatives. He also guided the implementation of each organization’s EMR.

Dykehouse holds a master's in health administration from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's in biology from Kalamazoo College. He has more than 25 years of experience in IT management. Dykehouse is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and served as chair of the organization’s board of directors in 2008.

Tom Abendroth, MD, who has served as the Medical Center's CIO since 2002, will become its first chief of medical informatics later this summer. In this role, he will guide efforts to leverage Penn State Hershey's electronic medical record to improve clinical care delivery and advance clinical research. He and Chief Quality Officer Greg Caputo, MD, co-direct the Medical Center's new Center for Quality Innovation, which seeks to improve patient outcomes through innovative use of the robust EMR foundation that the campus has built over the past 15 years.
