Medical Center names new Emergency Medicine department chair
Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center named Susan Promes, MD, MBA, FACEP, to chair its Department of Emergency Medicine.

After earning her bachelor's degree at Washington University in St. Louis, Promes received her MD from Penn State College of Medicine in 1991. She went on to complete residency training at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California, where she served as chief resident for emergency medicine. In 2012, Promes completed her MBA at the University of California – Davis Graduate School of Management. She has also served on the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine.
“Dr. Promes is an outstanding physician and educator who has received numerous awards and honors for excellence in teaching, leadership and service,” said Harold L. Paz, MD, MS, chief executive officer of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Health, Penn State's senior vice president for health affairs, and dean of Penn State College of Medicine. “I am pleased to welcome her back to Penn State Hershey, and I look forward to her strong leadership.”
Promes' academic interests include team training, bedside teaching, medical errors and clinical guidelines. Her research focuses on medical education and faculty development. Promes is active in professional groups including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Promes succeeds Lawrence Kass, MD, who served as interim chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine since July 2013.
