Massini: Employee Engagement Goal

Penn State Health CEO Steve Massini sent Penn State Health employees an email on Nov. 21 about the organizational goal of patient satisfaction. “Specifically, our goal is to improve Penn State Health’s employee engagement score by 2% or more in fiscal year 2020, which ends June 30,” he said. Kansas City Chiefs Running Back LeSean McCoy visited Penn State Health Children’s Hospital Nov. 21. The Harrisburg native and Bishop McDevitt High School graduate struck up conversations with dozens of people ― even though few of those interactions were with fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. Penn State Health St. Joseph – Muhlenberg to Move

Penn State Health St. Joseph – Muhlenberg is moving to a new facility that will continue to offer urgent care and family practice, as well as expanded medical services. The new facility will be located at 4301 N. 5th Street, the former site of Sunshine Beverage. The new location is larger – 11,000 square feet – and will offer expanded hours. The centerpiece will be a 7-day-a-week walk-in urgent care clinic with early morning, evening and weekend hours. It is slated to open in spring 2020.

Cancer Stroke Link Researched

Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine found that, compared with the general population, people who have or have had cancer are more than twice as likely to die of a stroke, and the risk increases with time. Additionally, cancers of the breast, prostate or colorectum were the types most commonly associated with fatal stroke. Nicholas Zaorsky, assistant professor in radiation oncology and public health sciences, said the results – recently published in Nature Communications – may help physicians identify patients at risk for fatal strokes. Eckerd Named Vice President of Health Systems Ambulatory Development

Kent Eckerd has been named vice president of health system ambulatory development for Penn State Health, effective Nov. 25. Eckerd will oversee ambulatory development and ambulatory facilities management across Penn State Health, including building and maintaining outpatient physician practices and ancillary services. He will report to Jeanette Gibbs, senior vice president of ambulatory services.

Paul Wins Director’s Award

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau has presented pediatrician and researcher Dr. Ian Paul with its 2019 Director’s Award. The bureau is part of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. Dr. Sarah Iriana, acting chair of pediatrics at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, nominated Paul for the award, praising him as “driven to find solutions to common problems facing infants and their families.” Read the full story.

Stretch and Meditate Dec. 4 to 18

We all know the holidays can be stressful with lots of expectations. Join Stretch and Meditate through the Holiday Season on Wednesdays, Dec. 4 to 18, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., at the University Fitness Center, MPR-C. Cilley Inaugural Lecture Dec. 5

Dr. Robert E. Cilley, professor of surgery and pediatrics and Chester Ray Trout Surgeon-in-Chief at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, will present his inaugural lecture entitled “Value-Based Healthcare or Healthcare Based on Values” on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. in Junker Auditorium in the College of Medicine. The endowed chair position was established through a bequest gift from Harrisburg native and former Marine Corps Cpl. Chester Ray Trout.

Research Database Lecture Dec. 10

Paula Valencia-Moulton and Aimee Merchlinski will present “Research Databases and Clinical Applications” from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at H4504 (Clinical Research Center) at College of Medicine. A streaming link is provided upon registration. The event is part of the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Research Methods Seminar Series. Register here by 5 p.m. on Dec. 9.

Commission for Women Book Club Dec. 11

Penn State Commission for Women’s Fall 2019 Book Club will hold its final discussion on “Our Women on the Ground: Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World” on Wednesday, Dec. 11, noon to 1 p.m. at Penn State College of Medicine, C1800. Bring your lunch; coffee and dessert will be provided.

Project ECHO Lecture Dec. 17

Penn State Project ECHO brings specialty care to underserved communities so patients can get the high-quality care they need, when they need it, and close to home. Penn State Project ECHO will host a lunchtime lecture and panel discussion on Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 11:30 a.m.to 1 p.m., in Junker Auditorium for faculty and staff interested in learning more about the program. Panelists will include community providers and specialists who have participated in the ECHO program.

SMaRT Connects Presentation Dec. 19

SMaRT Connects, a resource of the Staffing, Mentorship and Research Training (SMaRT) Program , will present “Harrell Health Sciences Library Resources” from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19 in the College of Medicine, Lecture Room A. Representatives from the Harrell Health Sciences Library will present how to access more than 6.9 million books, 400,000 ebooks, 110,000 online full-text journals and 706 databases.
