Inclusion Week promotes importance of equality at Penn State Health, College of Medicine

The pastoral care departments of Penn State Health will host a service to remember the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 18, at noon. A diverse panel from across the organization will lead the service and feature readings from his memorable speech, “I Have a Dream.”

The event kicks off Inclusion Week 2021 Jan. 18 through 22, featuring 10 virtual sessions presented by Penn State Health’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

“We are thrilled to be able to highlight so many aspects of diversity that aim to support and foster greater diversity at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine and the communities we serve,” said Lynette Chappell-Williams, vice president and chief diversity officer, Penn State Health.

Monday, Jan. 18

MLK’s Foundation for Health Equity ― 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Rev. Dr. Franklin Hairston-Allen, president of the Greater Harrisburg NAACP, reflects on the contributions of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how his legacy can be used to eliminate health care disparities in the U.S.

Tuesday, Jan. 19

The Latinx/Hispanic Cultural Contribution to Life in PA – 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

This session celebrates the cultural traditions and achievements of Pennsylvania’s vibrant Hispanic and Latinx American communities and addresses the health disparities that affect them.

Implications of the Flint Water Crisis on Health Care for Diverse Children – 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Public health advocate and author of “What the Eyes Don’t See,” Dr. Monna Hanna-Attisha, discusses the long-term effects the Flint, Mich., water crisis had on diverse and underserved children.

Calvin Pearson, founder of Project1619 Inc., shares insights on the history of the first Africans in English North America and their quest for freedom.

Creating Teams with Multiple Generations – 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Nat Alston, founder and president of The Horizons Group, discusses the skills to effectively lead a generationally diverse workforce.

The Impact of Disasters on Vulnerable Populations – 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Dr. Esther Chernak, associate clinical professor at Drexel University School of Public Health, highlights underserved communities that may be at higher risk of negative outcomes in the midst of a disaster.

Thursday, Jan. 21

Diversity in the Communities: Understanding Where Our Patients Come From – 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

As Penn State Health’s profile continues to grow, it is important for the organization to guide its sites through the diversity of the communities in which it operates, such as State College, York, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Reading, Hershey and Lebanon. This session celebrates the unique nature of Pennsylvania with the understanding that patients and employees come from many different backgrounds.

Members of the Penn State Health Physician Writers Group reflect on their relationship between their medical practices and literacy work.

Poverty as an Aspect of Diversity – 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

One aspect of diversity that is often overlooked is economic status, particularly among those who fall below the poverty level. This session focuses on poverty and the groups affected by it.
