Penn State Health issues medical marijuana use policy, required training

Penn State Health has delivered a new medical marijuana policy for acceptable use of medical marijuana and for disclosure requirements and procedures. Policy HR92 applies to all Penn State Health employees, applicants and volunteers. The policy does NOT apply to the College of Medicine. If you are a College of Medicine employee and supervise Penn State Health employees, you will be required to complete training regarding the policy.

Penn State Health employees will receive an email this week regarding required training on the new policy. Review the full policy on the Penn State Health policy portal from the Infonet home page.

Highlights of HR92:

  • New employees and volunteers must disclose that they are using medical marijuana and provide a copy of a valid Pennsylvania medical marijuana card before beginning work in any new position or new job duties.
  • Current employees and volunteers are required to disclose that they are using medical marijuana or when they begin using medical marijuana and provide a copy of a valid Pennsylvania medical marijuana card.
  • Failure to disclose medical marijuana status may result in discipline up to and including termination.
  • Employees and volunteers must immediately cease performing (or refrain from starting) job duties if they believe their medication will impair their job performance, safety, or the safety of others.
  • Employees and volunteers must not take or be impaired by medical marijuana while working and must not be in possession of medical marijuana on their person while working (including in any bags, purses, backpacks or similar items stored on work premises).
